We signmakers have a keen eye for what makes signs great. There are plenty of design techniques we employ to make sure business signs serves it’s main purpose – to catch eyes and promote brands. But that also means we see our fair share of hilarious signs with unintended messaging. Here are a few of our favorites:
Mmm… Appetizing
Imagine the difference a single typo makes. This is why you need to proof-read the text you put up in your signage. Unintended messaging can be quite embarrassing for companies, particularly big brands. Especially if they go viral. Double-especially if the typo ends up spelling “poopers” and it’s a restaurant sign.
Signs That Don’t Make The Cut
You‘re. Not Your.
At least if the sign’s a custom banner or a pop-up banner it can be easily replaced. This type of sign is easy to fabricate and set up. So you can get rid of the erroneous signage and swap it with a correct one really quick.
Unintentionally Harmful Messaging
This one is less funny and more sad. Businesses shouldn’t put out signage with messages that are harmful or negative. This one contributes to people’s poor self-image. It’s just irresponsible, especially from a big brand. People will recognize to negative messaging and react accordingly. Likewise, they’ll appreciate positive messages too. Brands should strive to make a positive impact, or at least be mindful of what they say with their signage and ads.
More Like No Way
Yeah… nope. A lot of these errors happen with pylon sign or lightbox inserts. Sometimes establishments run out of letters, or the one putting up the inserts makes a mistake with the spelling. So be sure to inspect your handiwork afterwards and check if there’s something off with it. Better do it before customers and passersby have a gander. Or else.
Make Sure Your Business Signs Are Impeccable
Your signs represent your brand. Typos convey carelessness. And unintended messages about poopers or people’s moms are a definite no-no. While some say any publicity, even bad publicity, still counts as good publicity… you don’t want to be too risky with your signage. Especially outdoor signs that will be visible to the entire world. No one wants their brand to become a laughingstock. So you’ve got to show them the best.
This is why you want your business signage to be handled by pros who’ll deliver results. High quality designs, materials and outcomes.
